The Pepeny, a pram or stroller/pushchair accessory, helps protect babies from the sun’s harmful Ultra Violet Rays (UVR). The Pepeny also provides protection from showers, snow and cold breezes. The Pepeny also reduces light and glare that can be distressing to your baby.

Rating UPF Fabric

The Pepeny is made of easy care nylon/lycra, a fabric soft and gentle to the touch, yet very durable. Every single batch of fabric used to make the Pepeny is tested and rated by ARPANSA (Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency. (See www.arpansa.gov.au) to ensure a minimum UPF50+ (Ultra Violet Protection Factor) rating. Our fabric testing regularly shows our fabric UPF as 200. UPF50+ is the HIGHEST POSSIBLE protection rating for fabric under strict Australian testing. This is because even the best fabric is never consistently 100 or 200 UPF. The UPF can vary over the length of the fabric. So we do not make extravagant or untruthful claims. We consistently provide your baby with the BEST protection against harmful UVR.

UPF Rating UVR Protection Effective Transmission%
15-24 Good 6.7 - 4.2
25-39 Very Good 4.2 - 2.6
40 to 50 Excellent 2.6-2.0
50+ THE BEST LESS THAN 2%**

**PEPENY fabric testing by ARPANSA usually produces results showing our fabrics have a UV transmission of LESS THAN ½%. However, because NO fabric has uniform transmission across every fibre of the fabric, Pepeny uses the recommended measurement of UPF as prescribed in AS/NZS 4399:1996.

ANYONE CLAIMING 99.5% PROTECTION FROM UVR IS MISLEADING CONSUMERS. There is NO International Standard, but at Pepeny we do not claim UPF100+ or UPF150+. We accept, and comply with the fabric testing standard under AS/NZS 4399:1996. That Standard states that UPF50+ is the highest claim that may be made.

Using Your Pepeny

Babies need protecting from any angle of the sun. The Pepeny solves the problem because it is adjustable to any position to provide protection. Placed on top of the pram/stroller hood, the Pepeny extends the shade of the existing hood. But the Pepeny can be easily adjusted to a range of positions: forwards, backwards, or to either side of the pram/stroller, simply by lengthening or shortening the ties. You are in complete control of your baby’s comfort and protection.

Experiment by attaching the ties to different parts of your stroller frame. You will find that you can increase or decrease the ‘lift’ of the Pepeny by attaching the ties on the flaps towards the front of the stroller. By lengthening the back ties the Pepeny can be adjusted to maximize forward coverage.

Attachment and Storage

The Pepeny is quickly and easily attached to any model of pram or stroller with a hood. This combination provides maximum protection adjustability.

Many mothers tell us that they successfully attach the Pepeny to strollers without a hood or canopy. However, although this provides far more protection than nothing at all, it is not ideal and we do not recommend the Pepeny being used without support. If you do not have a hood, you may be able to purchase a hood or canopy that is attachable to your stroller.

The Pepeny can also be used on forward facing car seats! The advantage here is that your baby can even be protected from UVR coming through the car windows. Yes, glass allows UVR through! But do ensure that the Pepeny is firmly tied to the car seat and all ties are away from inquisitive fingers.

When not is use the Pepeny is lightweight and portable. Its unique design includes an inbuilt pouch so it can be folded to a size small enough to fit into an average handbag.

Accessibility

Your baby is accessible immediately because the soft cover allows you to simply flip the Pepeny back over the pram/stroller hood. You have immediate access to your baby! This is so important. You MUST be able to immediately access your baby when there is any sign of distress. Please be wary of using any sunshades that have to be undone before you can access your baby. Seconds count when a baby is in distress!

Visibility and Ventilation

Pepeny protects babies from the direct sun but still allows them to observe their world, whilst at the same time maintaining ventilation. Never use anything that may restrict airflow or increase the heat retention under the hood. If you do not realise how much heat can build up behind a cloth draped from a hood, experiment with a thermometer and the stroller in the sun. Do NOT have your baby in the pram if you try this. You will be horrified at the heat build up!

Unless UVR conditions (see below) or the angle of the sun require it to be completely pulled forward, the Pepeny protects babies from the direct sun and still allows them to observe their world. This is very important for your baby’s mental development.

Safety Issues

  • Use a Pepeny UltraViolet Radiation Sensor to check the UVR

  • To maximise UVR protection use the Pepeny in conjunction with other sun protection measures. Use a UPF hat, clothing and sunglasses. (Please be very careful about using chemical suncreams on small babies! Babies under 12 months old have delicate skin. Their skin should not be exposed to harmful chemicals!) Cancer councils worldwide recommend FULL SHADE in preference to suncreams for small babies

  • Pepeny may not protect against reflected or scattered UVR unless it is used properly. UVR may be reflected off snow or glass or polished and other surfaces.

  • Do not leave any child unattended and do check them frequently. Anything can cause distress to a child and we know that sensible mothers would never leave their child unattended.

  • Never expose a baby to direct sunlight and never leave a child in direct sun for extended periods. Even a Pepeny, with its breathable fabric, cannot protect children from the ambient heat. Direct sun can produce high temperatures both in and around the stroller.

  • Keep the Pepeny ties out of children's reach. Attach securely to the pram/stroller frame and outside of the passenger compartment. Attach the Pepeny to a low position on the stroller frame(below the reach of inquisitive fingers)!

  • The Storage pouch is designed to stow your Pepeny - do not put other objects in the pouch.

  • Do not use the Pepeny near any open fire or flame, eg. barbeques.

*Use any search engine to search for UltraViolet Radiation and you should be able to find estimate forecasts of local UVR. Daily weather forecasts often give UVR forecasts as well.
